Your Guide to Picking the Best Driveway Lighting

Lighting your driveway can be a great idea. Installing driveway lighting can help you navigate your property in the dark and avoid driving over flower beds or into low steps.

The obvious time to think about outside lighting is winter, as this is when we get the least amount of daylight. But if you put in the effort to get some quality driveway lighting now, you’ll probably find that you’ll appreciate it throughout the year.

Powering your driveway lighting: wireless or wired?

When you’re considering different types of driveway lighting, you need to decide whether to go for wireless or wired ones.

Wired lighting is generally more powerful than wireless lighting. It’s also less labour-intensive to maintain as you don’t need to worry about changing batteries. However, wired lighting can be relatively difficult to install. You’ll probably need an electrician to help you and make sure the work complies with Building Regulations.

Wireless driveway lighting tends to be either solar- or battery-powered. It’s often less powerful than mains-powered lighting but is significantly easier to set up where you want it. Certain solar lights only stay lit for a limited period so are not the best option if you’re going to be very dependent on them. But if you want to use renewable energy or keep your electricity bills down, solar lighting could be the best choice.

Finding the best style of driveway lighting for you

Once you’ve worked out how you’re going to power your lights, you can look at different style options.

Ground lights

Ground lights are extremely popular as they’re compact and unobtrusive. Tough or recessed ground lights are a great choice if you want something you can drive over. They’re relatively easy to install, but many types need wiring in.

Spotlights

Spotlights are a good choice if you want to highlight special features on or around your driveway. You can position them to shine on trees, your home or specific parts of your driveway, in addition to using them to mark boundaries.

Post lights

Post lights are a great type of driveway lighting to use if you want something decorative. There are several types available, so whether you want old-fashioned lanterns or sleek, minimal posts, you should be able to find the right style for you.

Once you’ve picked your product, lighting your driveway should be pretty straightforward. Experiment with making both symmetrical and asymmetrical patterns, as both can look great.
